Visit my website at http://www.junglejoel.com - the 24 inch Clark Refractor is one of the most famous telescopes in the world. This video records an excellent lecture given by a Lowell Observatory staff member on the history of this telescope. It is one of the largest refractors ever built, and has seen consistent use since 1896. This is the telescope Percival Lowell used to document the alleged "canals" on Mars. There is also evidence that Edgar Rice Burroughs drew upon Lowell's work in his description of mythical Barsoom -the location used in his John Carter on Mars stories. The "canals on Mars" myth persisted through much of the Twentieth Century, until the Mariner 4 space probe flew by Mars in 1965. Please rate and comment, thanks!
